Yes! Members can sign up anytime, so long as we have not sold out. The share price will be prorated based on cost per week. Payment plans may be more limited once CSA has started.
Through the online management system members may change their subscription size or delivery location. This may be done at any time during the season; however, changes must be made at least 7 days prior to a delivery, otherwise those changes will take effect the following week.
We caution that all produce should be cleaned before use. Since we grow on some fine West Michigan sand, there may be some dirt in your veggies. They are, after all, a raw agricultural product.
Suggestions for cleaning: fill your sink to a depth greater than the volume of produce you wish to clean and agitate the veggies in question. Consider un-bunching things like cilantro, kale, chard or parsley. Chop leaf lettuces to desired size before soaking and agitating. Give spinach some extra time and agitation. Flat leaves do not give up their earthy origins easily.
If you don’t have one, invest in a quality salad spinner. We have an OXO, purchased second hand for $3 that does the trick. Storing veggies in the salad spinner is also suggested, when possible.
You can pay for your Membership in a variety of ways including cash, check, or ACH. Unlike 2017, we are only accepting ACH and physical payments because of significant credit card fees.
Here’s how it works: Each week your share box will be pre-selected by John and Kate. On Saturdays at 8 a.m. you’ll receive an email reminding you that the webstore is open. Now’s the time to log into your account and make changes and additions for your next delivery.
Important: If you do not log in and modify your share, you will receive a regular farmers’ choice box. You are not required to customize your box – it is merely an option!
- Why won’t the store let you add more of an item? This can happen for two reasons: 1) We have simply run out of an item. 2) When we have a limited quantity of something we may limit the number of that item per person in order to give more members access to a ‘rare’ item.
We offer a split payment plan that deducts the full price of your shares over two months. For fall ordering, payment is submitted on the evening after delivery.
It’s very helpful! We can accommodate those without an Internet connection or email on full season shares. We do require that you use either ACH or check for payment. Without Internet access, you will receive a ‘farmers choice’ share which will not be customizable – all customization happens online!
CSA is more expensive to put together than a farmer’s market stand, and members pay an average of 20% less on most veggies. We charge a $30 fee from each share to help cover the costs of packaging, boxes and supplies, as well as our fancy online ordering system. As a small farm purchasing small quantities of boxes, bags, etc, these costs add up! We try to offset this small fee by offering our CSA members our best prices on all our produce.
We stay in touch via email! System notifications, newsletters and personal communications will happen through email. It’s very important that you explicitly allow all communications from littleredorganics.com, csa.farmigo.com, and mailchimp.com in your email settings. LRO emails can get caught in spam filters otherwise, and we don’t want our members missing out on important news and updates.
This page contains the nuts, bolts, and practicalities of being a CSA member. As a member, you agree to our Terms and Conditions, please use this link for reference.
Your CSA box(es) will be labeled with your name. All you need to do is head to your chosen location on THURSDAYS! during the posted hours and pick up your box. If you’ve forgotten where/when to pick up, you can log in and find all the information in your account. Please, do not take or open anyone else’s box! If you’ve ordered a large quantity of produce, double check to see if you have more than one box.
If you arrive to your pick up spot and your box is not there, contact us immediately. It (rarely) happens that someone takes the wrong box, and we’ll clear it up ASAP!
If you have ANY issues with your box, or the pickup site you need to contact the farm directly. Please do not contact a pickup site directly regarding share issues (pickup time, location of your box, hours of operation, etc). Our pickup sites are ‘unpaid volunteers’ and are in no way responsible for providing customer support for our CSA.
Once you have received the first week’s delivery, please be sure to return your boxes each week! Alternatively, a popular solution is to bring reusable grocery bags, empty your box into those and leave the box at the pickup location.
We provide some recipes in our newsletters and on Facebook; however, we know a lot of the fun of CSA is experimenting with new vegetables and expanding your culinary range. Feel free to share your favorite recipes with us, and we can pass them on to others (and try them ourselves!). Here are some suggestions to get you started:
When you purchase a share, you are ‘subscribing’ to Little Red Organic’s veggies. Options are secondary items that can be added to a share. You can add LRO cut flowers, Mycopia mushrooms or Omage coffee to any veggie share, for example. Members cannot add options without a veggie share.
You can take a vacation at any time. Unused funds will simply remain in your account for use before or after your vacation. Please notify us that you are taking a vacation week 7 days in advance!
You can add vacations yourself here, or contact the farm.
2019 Crop Changes: The following crops have been removed due to seasonal limits (shorter CSA season) Broccoli Raab, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cantaloupe, Romanesco, Collards, Eggplant, Fennel, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Cipollini Onions, Parsnips, Fingerling Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Watermelon & Black Radish, Rutabaga, Shallots, Watermelon.
Wanna trade? We offer a limited number of Memberships through workshares. Our workshare members exchange their time and labor for a CSA subscription. Workshare members in past seasons have mostly worked in the areas of washing, bagging and packing produce in preparation for CSA delivery. This year we will also be looking for workshare members who are interested in doing some field work – these positions will be more physically demanding. A typical workshare shift is 3-4 hours, and workshare members typically work 3-4 days per month. Workshares do not include non-LRO produced items or cut flowers.
Please contact us if you are interested in the workshare program.
When you sign up for a subscription, you create an account. This is your hub for payments, customization, and vacation holds. You can log in anytime to make changes to your account. You may only customize your box/add purchases during the ‘open’ hours of the webstore, which will be 8 a.m. Saturday – 4 p.m. Tuesday. Please see account links to the in the main menu.
